CAMERON — A big second inning helped propel the Cameron Yellowjackets past the Howe Lions by a score of 16-0 Monday afternoon.
Wister 16, McCurtain 0: In McCurtain, the Wildcats (13-2) jumped out to a 13-0 lead after an inning and never looked back.
Panola 10, Whitesboro 5: In Whitesboro, the Bulldogs (9-10) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning.
But the Bearcats scored twice in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, then scored four runs in the seventh inning to take 10-1 lead.

Poteau sixth-grade Bandit League team beats Vian, while visiting Wolverines win other games in home openers

It was a rough set of home openers for the 2011 Poteau Bandit League football teams Saturday at Costner Stadium against Vian.
The visiting Wolverines took three of the four games played, with only the Poteau sixth-grade team posting a win by a score of 14-0.
In the other games, Vian won two of them by shutout — 45-0 in the third-grade game and 32-0 in the fifth-grade game. The Wolverines took the fourth-grade game 13-6.
In the sixth-grade game, Kale Barcheers scored both touchdowns on runs.
In the fourth-grade game, Easton Francis scored the lone TD for Poteau.

Arkoma's first road game Friday night against SW Christian

After being home for the first two weeks of the 2011 season, the Arkoma Mustangs football team will hit the road for the first time. But their road trip is about a three-hour journey as they will travel to Norman to face Southwest Christian Academy at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Heavener seeks second straight win, visits Paris, Ark., Friday night

The Heavener Wolves football team did not get its first win of the season until Week 8 last season.
This year, they got that first victory of the new campaign in their home opener this past Friday night with a 21-6 win over the Sallisaw-Central Tigers at Harvey Stadium.
Now, the Wolves (1-1) will seek their second straight win when they visit the Paris (Ark.) Eagles at 7:30 p.m. this Friday.

Mixed emotions for new Panama coach facing his former Gore team

Last year at this time, Brandon Ellis was getting his Gore Pirates ready to face the Panama Razorbacks at George Ollie Stadium in the non-district finale. This year, it's a 180-degree turn for Ellis.
Ellis, Panama's new football coach, will face his former team at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Gore.
“I'm excited,” Ellis said. “I'm fired up, and the kids are fired up for me. They know important it is to win — not only for them, but for me, also.”

Poteau girls split final two games at OU Tournament; pitcher no-hits Choctaw Lady Yellowjackets

NORMAN — The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team split its final two games in the University of Oklahoma Tournament Saturday at the OU Softball Complex.
Poteau began the day with a 4-2 win over the Choctaw Lady Yellowjackets, but lost a hard-fought 1-0 contest to the Washington Lady Warriors.

Wister boys repeat as champs of Wood Bat Tournament

HOWE — For the second straight fall, the championship plaque of the Howe Wood Bat Tournament is going to Wister High School.
The Wildcats doubled up the Cameron Yellowjackets 4-2 Saturday night at Lions Field to win their second straight Wood Bat Tournament title.
The ’Cats began the day with a 12-1 four-inning, run-rule win over the Whitesboro Bulldogs in one championship semifinal, while the ’Jackets got a no-hitter from Alex Humphries to defeat the Clayton Bulldogs 8-0 in a five-inning, run-rule victory in the other semfinal.

'One-Man Show' does need help to get things covered

Saturday afternoon, our business manager, Paula Midgley (whose husband, George, writes the weekly Lookin' Down the Barrel outdoor column every Thursday) send me a text message. The message said that this individual was disappointed in the fact that nothing was reported on last week's LeFlore County Junior High Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament.
I responded by simply saying, “No one ever called in scores to me.”

Heavener girls capture Henryetta Invitational; Wolves finish in third; Poteau Pirate Invitational slated Saturday morning

HENRYETTA — The Heavener Lady Wolves cross country team won Saturday morning's Henryetta Invitational.
The Lady Wolves scored 79 points, with Quinton and Glenpool tying for second (97 points).
Two Lady Wolves finished in the top 10 — Araceli Farias was seventh (14:26) and Johna Enger was eighth (14:46). Kaylen Leder was 17th (15:23), Jazmin Cruz was 19th (15:38) and Caitlin Carson was 28th (16:50).
The Wolves were third in their meet with 89 points. Host Henryetta won its own meet with 36 points, with Glenpool runner-up (76 points).
