Local football foursome play final high school contest in Friday’s OCA All-State Game

August 4, 2014

When you play your last high school football game, you give the best you got. That’s what four area players did Friday night in the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Football Game at Lee Snider Field at Spartan Stadium at Bixby High School. And for two it was indeed their last.
Poteau’s Jace Pitchford and Carlos Aguilar, along with Arkoma’s Tanner Sweeten and Talihina’s Jordan Blue made their share of contributions as members of the East team in its 23-14 defeat of the West.

Spiro hoopster helps Small East down Small West in All-State Game; Red Oak’s Deatherage, who will play college baseball at EOSC, played in final competitive basketball contest

August 1, 2014

Spiro’s Knifeis Carter was all over the floor while leading the East with 16 points Thursday night in the Oklahoma Coaches Association Small School All-State Boys Basketball game at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center in Tulsa.
Carter made some big plays that consisted of a stretch of steals and rebounds, helping his team in a 28-7 fourth-quarter run en route to a 72-56 win against the West.
Bryce Deatherage of Red Oak also was in the game. He scored two points with his only basket coming on a first-quarter lay-up.

With the arrival of August means the arrival of fall ball on the diamond with the 2014 fast-pitch softball and fall baseball seasons beginning Aug. 12.
That means the first sports special section of the 2014-15 season will come out soon — the 2014 Falll Diamond Tab, which will be published on Aug. 16. Therefore, I'll begin to work on that at the end of next week.

While there was no LeFlore County athlete or coach in the spotlight during Wednesday’s action in the 2014 Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Games in the Tulsa metropolitan area, there were two individuals who did stand out.
Former Poteau and current Stilwell wrestling coach Chris Barbee was awarded with the Outstanding Achievement Award by OCA for his 15 years of service during the All-State Wrestling Matches at Bixby High School. The East dominated the West 45-6.

My vacation to Green Bay training camp, Packer 5k run

July 31, 2014

It all started July 23 when Richard Reif picked me up at 4 a.m. and drove to Tulsa to pick up Richard's brother, Jim, as we were on our way for the opening of the 2014 Green Bay Packers training camp as well as run in The Packer 5k at Lambeau Field.
We got to St. Louis by noon on July 23 so we could eat lunch at Cousin Hugo's, which is our traditional lunch stop on our annual trip to Green Bay so we can enjoy its wings and burgers.
After lunch, we arrived at Brad Kraemer's house in Prairie du Sac, Wisc., at about 8 p.m. It only took us 16 hours to get from here to there.
