HAILEYVILLE â€” The Leflore High School basketball teams split their road games Tuesday night against the homestanding Haileyville squads.
The Lady Savages prevailed 67-29, but the Savages struggled with cold shooting as they fell 40-33 to the Warriors.
The Talihina Lady Golden Tigers will begin their basketball season with an 11 a.m. contest today against the Sallisaw-Central Lady Tigers in an opening-round game of the 2014 Choctaw Nation Invitational Tournament on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.
The Golden Tigers, who saw their football season end in the Class A state semifinals last weekend for the second straight season, will wait until next week to begin their season. The Talihina JV will take the varsity's spot in this week's tournament, facing Kingston in today's opening-round game.
The Arkoma Mustangs, the host Cameron Yellowjackets, the Howe Lions and the Wister Wildcats were opening-round victors in Tuesdayâ€™s action in the third annual Green Valley Conference Tournament at the Cameron Gym.
The Mustangs defeated the Keota Lions 67-65, while the â€™Jackets stung the Bokoshe Tigers 77-46. The Mustangs and the Yellowjackets will meet in the championship semifinals at 8:30 p.m. Friday with the winner advancing to Saturday nightâ€™s 8:50 p.m. title game. The loser will play for third place at 5 p.m. Saturday.
The Spiro High School basketball teams finished last season at the Class 3A State Tournament, only to have quick exits â€” as the Lady Bulldogs lost to Washington in the quarterfinals, while on the same night the â€™Dogs fell to Verdigris.
Both Spiro teams, who begin their seasons Thursday at the Wilburton Tournament, will try to get back there once more.
The Lady Bulldogs, who were 21-7 last season, will meet the Hartshorne Lady Miners at 7 p.m. Thursday in the opening round.
The â€™Dogs, who were 24-3 last season, will meet Stigler at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
Four LeFlore County girls teams posted opening-round victories in the third annual Green Valley Conference Tournament on Monday at the Cameron Gym.
The top seed, the Howe Lady Lions, handled the McCurtain Lady Bulldogs 68-22 in the final game of the day.
The Lady Lions will meet the Wister Wildcats, a 52-40 winner over the Bokoshe Lady Tigers, in one championship semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Bokoshe and McCurtain will play in the first of two consolation semifinals at 4 p.m. Thursday.
