HOWE — The regular season ended on a high note for the Howe Lions, who roared past the McCurtain Bulldogs 11-1 Monday afternoon at Lions Field.
The Lions, who trailed 1-0 in the opening inning, scored four in the first inning, three in the second and four more in the third for an 11-1 lead.
Smithville 3, Whitesboro 2: In Smithvile, the Braves scored three runs in the first inning and withstood a seventh-inning rally by the Bulldogs, who scored their two runs in the fifth inning on Avery McCarley’s two-run double.

Bandit League teams go 3-0 against Roland; no fourth-grade contest

All three Poteau Bandit League football teams who played Saturday against Roland at Costner Stadium were victorious.
The sixth-graders routed Roland 36-0, which came on the heels of the fifth-grade’s 14-0 victory over the Rangers. The day began with the third-graders blasting Roland 33-0.
There was no fourth-grade game as Roland did not have a team.

Heavener girls get past Pocola for first fast-pitch county title since ’02

For the first time since winning back-to-back county titles in 2001 and 2002, the LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Tournament was won by the Heavener Lady Wolves.
The Lady Wolves scored the game-winning run on an error to down the Pocola Lady Indians 3-2 in Monday night's title game at Panama. The same two teams met for the slow-pitch county title in April, with Heavener winning it after being forced into the if-game by Pocola.

CASC softball team goes 3-0 in SE Festival

DURANT — The Carl Albert State College softball team had a good showing in its fall outing last weekend, going 3-0 in the Southeastern Festival. The Lady Vikings beat Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa 4-1, Rose State 6-5 and North Central Texas 3-0.

Heavener runners place at Okemah

OKEMAH — Eight Heavener High School cross country runners placed in Saturday's first-ever Okemah Cross Country Meet.
On the boys side, Frank Cruz was runner-up (18:55), Jonathan Gopar was seventh (20:15), David Farias was eighth (20:40), Devon Mathews was 11th (21:26) and Esteban Martinez was 14th (22:32).
Barbara Johnson was third (13:47), Iria Martinez sixth (15:15) and Brenda Macias 12th (18:38) in the girls division.
The Heavener runners will return to action next Saturday at the Oklahoma State University Jamboree in Stillwater.

Playoffs begin this week; county fast-pitch softball champ crowned Monday night

The second season has begun for the non-Poteau fast-pitch softball teams and the five county fall baseball teams as their district tournaments will begin this week — some in fact today. The complete schedule is at the end of this column.
The Poteau Lady Pirates found out Friday that they will go to Broken Bow for their Class 4A District Tournament next week.
The week started by crowning the 2014 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament champion Monday night in Panama. Look for the story in Wednesday’s edition.

INDIANOLA — The Leflore Lady Savages brought home some hardware, but it wasn’t from the LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Tournament. The Lady Savages beat host Indianola 6-2 to win the Indianola Tournament.
Heavener 3, Vici 0; Heavener 5, Berryhill 3; Heavener 10, Woodward 3; Cushing 6, Heavener 1; Panama 5, Tushka 1; Panama 11, Colgate 0; Berryhill 4, Panama 2; Cushing 6, Panama 0: At Oklahoma Shootout in Mustang, the Lady Wolves went 3-1 while the Lady Razorbacks went 2-2 in the two-day event.

LEFLORE — The Leflore Savages made sure it was going to be a happy weekend as they beat Whitesboro 9-1 and Oktaha 11-7 in Saturday’s home three-way at John Ward Field. Oktaha defeated Whitesboro 13-5.
In the victory over Whitesboro, the Savages, leading 3-1, scored six runs in the sixth inning to put the game into run-rule status.
The Bulldogs, whose Friday afternoon game at Panola was canceled, got a double apiece from Austin Stepp and Avery McCarley.
In Leflore’s victory over Oktaha, a seven-run sixth inning rallied the locals from a 6-4 deficit.

Panama boys rally to down Warner in OT

WARNER — Trailing 28-6 at halftime, the Panama Razorbacks rallied in the second half to tie the game at 28, then won the game 36-28 in overtime over the homestanding Warner Eagles on Friday night.
“It was huge for the program, and huge for the mental aspect of the game,” Panama coach Brandon Ellis said. “The kids never gave up. They dug down deep in the second half. We didn't do anything differently as far as play calling goes, but they just got after it in the second half."

Spiro Bulldogs get road win over Haskell Haymakers

September 23, 2014

HASKELL — The Spiro Bulldogs kept their 2014 record perfect on the season with a 42-28 road win over the Haskell Haymakers on Friday night.
The Bulldogs will begin District 3A-8 play at 7 p.m. Friday against Roland at McClain Stadium.
