Pocola girls beat Stratford in state quarterfinals, but lose to eventual state champion Washington in semifinals

SHAWNEE — The good news for the Pocola Lady Indians softball team was it finally got to play its Class 4A State Tournament at the Ballfields at Firelake, and even won its state quarterfinal game 14-2 over Stratford.
However, the Lady Indians' season came to an end with a 10-0 loss in the state semifinals to eventual state champion Washington. Pocola finished this spring at 23-15.

First it was the Poteau Pirates baseball team playing the waiting game on completing their Class 4A Regional Tournament, that started May 5 and was suspended by rain and saw the Pirates wait about a week before resuming.
Now, it’s the Pocola Lady Inidans’ turn.

Poteau hires new football coach Friday afternoon

With spring drills beginning Monday, the Poteau Pirates football team has a new leader.
Forrest Mazey was hired Friday at a special meeting of the Poteau Public Schools Board to replace Greg Werner, who left to take the coaching job with the Van Buren, Ark., Pointers.

The new football season won’t begin until September, but a head start will begin Monday when the Poteau Pirates football team will begin its two-week spring practice.
Not only are the Pirates preparing for a new season, they’ll get a new coach to help them as Mangum coach Forrest Mazey was hired Friday as the new Poteau football coach to replace Greg Werner, who went to coach the Van Buren [Ark.] Pointers.

Wister boys fall in eight innings to Latta in 2A state quarterfinals

The good news for the Wister Wildcats baseball team was it grabbed the early lead in the Class 2A State Tournament quarterfinal game with the Latta Panthers, which took place Thursday afternoon at Shawnee’s Ed Skelton Field. The bad news was they ended up with a heartbreaking loss.
The Panthers scored a run in the eighth inning to win 3-2 to end the Wildcats’ season at 21-6.

Poteau girls’ 3,200-relay, local hurdler win state championships; Spiro 800-meter relay captures gold in state-record time

MOORE — For two local relay teams and a Heavener hurdler, they returned to LeFlore County on Tuesday night from the Class 3A-4A State Meet, which took place Monday and Tuesday at Lions Stadium, as champions.
The Poteau Lady Pirates, 3,200-meter relay team of Kandace Standridge, Sheridan Hoyer, Madison Williamson and Bryce Vickers won the Class 4A state title with a time of 9:50.29.
It assured Standridge her second straight state gold medal in as many years. However, her shot at repeating as the 800-meter run state champ did not happen as she was sixth with a time of 2:23.52.

MIDWEST CITY — Talihina senior sprinter Bryar Humphreys came close to two state championships, but settled for second best each time.
Humphreys was the Class 2A state runner-up in the 100-meter (11.07 seconds) and the 200-meter dashes (22.78) at the state meet, which took place at Carl Albert High School’s Titan Stadium.
Howe’s 800-meter relay team of Jentry Brown, Macee Williams, Morgan Turner and Kerstein Hall was third in Class 2A with a time of 1:51.17 to earn bronze medals.

Wister pitchers believe Wildcats can win state title this weekend

In the spring season of 2010, the Wister Wildcats baseball team made state. It began a streak of six straight seasons the ’Cats made state, winning the Class 2A state title in the spring of 2011. That streak ended in the fall of 2012.
However, the Wildcats look to begin a new streak when they meet the Latta Panthers at 1:30 this afternoon at Shawnee High School's Ed Skelton Field in the Class 2A state quarterfinals.

Santa Fe South ends Poteau boys’ soccer season in state semifinals again

Perhaps Tuesday night’s Class 4A state semifinal match was between the two most successful 4A soccer programs in Oklahoma for the past four seasons.
Poteau has made runs all the way to the semifinals for the past four years, while winning the championship in 2013.
Oklahoma City Sante Fe South has been on a roll for the past three seasons as they will be appearing in their third straight state title match as for the second season the Saints ended the Pirates’ season in the state semifinals with a 2-0 win Tuesday night at Costner Stadium.
