It's County Tournament Week, for the 83rd time in history

It's hard to believe that it's been a year since the 82nd LeFlore County Tournament took place, but it has. The 83rd edition began Monday.
The LeFlore County Tournament Guide was in Saturday's edition with the numeric rosters and team photographs of all 26 teams as well as the brackets — but it also has a typo by yours truly.

Pocola softball player signs with Connors State College on Friday

Pocola Lady Indians shortstop Desi Carter said that softball was “like family almost.” She’ll be with that “family” into the next level.
The senior shortstop signed a letter of intent with Connors State College in a signing ceremony Friday morning inside the high school gym lobby.
“I feel that I’m going to be happy there,” said Carter, who was one of three LeFlore County players to be named to the Small School East Fast-Pitch All-State Team this past fall. “It seemed like a good choice. I know I’m going to like it.”

Thompson wins first Pigskin Picks Contest

Poteau resident Tobey Thompson kept seeing one of the winners of the Poteau Daily News' Pigskin Picks Contest, Robert Swinford, winning quite often, so he decided to join in the fun. It took him 20 weeks, but he finally got a win.
Thompson bested all the contestants in last week's contest, going 4-1, to win the $25 prize.
The ballot for next weekend’s contest was in Saturday's physical edition on Page 5A. That ballot will need to be turned in by 5 p.m. Friday to be eligible for that contest’s $25 prize-winning check.

The Poteau High School basketball teams’ Pink-Out Games will be Jan. 27 against Spiro at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse, with the girls’ game at 6:30 p.m. and the boys’ contest at 8 p.m.
There will be baked goods for sale with all proceeds to be donated to the American Cancer Society.

The second annual Hungry Like the Wolf 5k/10k fun run/walk and two-mile walk will take place beginning at noon Feb. 21 at Blues Park in Heavener. Race-day registration and packet pick-up will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Packets may also be picked up from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday at Heavener High School.

HEAVENER — The Talihina Golden Tigers picked up a road win Thursday night as they beat the homestanding Heavener Wolves 57-44 at the Heavener Gym.
The Golden Tigers jumped out to a 16-5 lead after a period and never lost the lead.
Panama 79, Bokoshe 48: At Bokoshe Tigers Fieldhouse, the Razorbacks, who led 10-6 after a period and 22-15 at halftime, put the game away by outscoring the Tigers 31-11 in the third quarter to take a 53-26 lead into the final period to spoil Bokoshe's homecoming.

BOKOSHE — The Bokoshe Lady Tigers got their second straight win as they clawed the Panama Lady Razorbacks 67-38 Thursday night at Bokoshe Tigers Fieldhouse to celebrate homecoming.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 17-9 lead, but they put the game away with a 23-6 second period to take a 40-15 halftime advantage and never looked back.
Heavener 65, Talihina 24: In Heavener, the Lady Wolves jumped out to a 24-7 lead after a period and never looked back.

McAlester teams sweep Poteau

The Poteau High School basketball teams suffered a pair of home losses to McAlester on Thursday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
The Lady Buffaloes kept the Lady Pirates at bay for a 41-35 victory, while the Buffaloes nipped the Pirates 63-60.

Poteau beats Sallisaw, loses to Wagoner in Class 4A District Dual matches; Pirates will welcome Checotah for homecoming Tuesday night

WAGONER — The Poteau Pirates wrestling team split its two matches in Thursday night’s Class 4A District Duals triangular.
The Pirates upset No. 7 Sallisaw 47-33, but lost 58-15 to No. 4 Wagoner.
The Pirates’ final Class 4A District Duals match will be with the Stilwell Indians on the road at 7 p.m. Jan. 29. They must beat the Indians to have any chance to win the district duals and earn the trip to the Class 4A Dual State Tournament which will be next month.

NOC-Enid teams take two from Carl Albert; CASC teams hit road Sunday to meet Western

Shooting 41.5 percent from the field, while holding the Vikings to 37 percent from the field proved to be the difference for the Northern Oklahoma College-Enid Jets in their 71-55 win over the Carl Albert State College Vikings on Thursday night at the Mabee Center in Enid.
A 19-point halftime lead proved to be the difference for the 18th-ranked NOC-Enid Lady Jets  in their 71-51 win over the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in Thursday night’s first contest.
