Poteau boys beat Spiro to make county finals

The Poteau Pirates are a win away from successfully defending their LeFlore County Tournament title.
The Pirates got past the Spiro Bulldogs 4-1 Thursday at Town Creek Park.
The Pirates played for the title Friday night in Cameron against the winner of Friday's loser's-bracket final between Spiro and Pocola. Friday's games were to have been at host Heavener, but the Wolves' field was too wet.
If the Pirates lost, there will be a winner-take-all title game at 1 p.m. Saturday in Cameron.

WISTER — Due to wet fields at Heavener, the 2014 LeFlore County Baseball Tournament's consolation games on Thursday were played here. Of the four teams who were here, the Pocola Indians staved off elimination to make it to Friday night's loser's-bracket contest at Cameron.
The Indians got past the Wister Wildcats for the second time in the tournament, posting a 4-1 victory, after holding off their archrivals, the Panama Razorbacks, 6-5.
The ’Cats eliminated tournament-host Heavener 8-0 in six innings in the first game of the day.

Poteau girls second at Mansfield track meet; Lady Pirate relay teams break meet records in winning their events

MANSFIELD, Ark. — The Poteau Lady Pirates track team came in second at the Senior Tiger Relays on Tuesday. The Lady Pirates scored 110 points, finishing behind host Mansfield (128 points).
In coming in runners-up, the Lady Pirates had two relay teams set meet records.
The Spiro Lady Bulldogs were fifth with 52 points, while the Heavener Lady Wolves were sixth (47.5).
Arkoma's Jasmin Roberts got her team's five points as she was fourth in the discus.
On the boys' side the Pirates got their five points from Mason Jones, who was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.

Locals compete in martial arts tournament last weekend in OKC

OKLAHOMA CITY — Last weekend, martial arts students from Oklahoma Combat Sports, Ethan Carey, L.J. Butler, Garrett Butler and Bret Butler, competed in the 2014 Oklahoma State BJJ Championships. This was these athletes' first-ever state championships appearance.
Carey won two gold medals, L.J. Butler took home a gold and two silver medals, Garrett Butler won two bronze medals and Bret Butler took home a bronze medal.
Their coaches are Steve Young and Duke Nobles.

McCoy Scholarship Bass Tournament taking place Saturday at Wister Lake

The Dakota McCoy Memorial Scholarship Bass Tournament will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Wards Landing on Wister Lake. The entry fee is $40 per angler. The top three placers will receive a cash payout, and they will have a “Ram Beast of the Week” big bass sponsored by Martin-Dunn Dodge.
There will be a cookout sponsored by PriceCutter, with The Community State Bank “Pit Master” Michael Bailey cooking the food, after the tournament concludes. There will also be drawings for various prizes.

Poteau soccer teams split with Hilldale on homecoming

The Poteau High School soccer teams split their homecoming games Tuesday with Hilldale. The Pirates, the defending Class 4A state champions, beat the Hornets 3-1, but the Lady Hornets stung the Lady Pirates 5-1.
The Poteau teams will travel to meet Atoka on Friday, with the girls game at 5 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m. at Atoka's Phillips Field.

POCOLA — A late-inning rally propelled the Pocola Lady Indians to an 11-9 come-from-behind victory over the Poteau Lady Pirates on Tuesday afternoon to give their coach, Carrie Covey, a nice birthday present.
Trailing 9-7 in the sixth inning, the Lady Indians got a solo home run by Courtney Hargrove, a two-run homer by Madison Hudkins and and RBI double by Sammie Kuhns to produce four runs and the win.
Whitesboro 10, Talihina 0; Battiest 4, Whitesboro 3: In Talihina, the Lady Bulldogs split their two games in Tuesday's three-way.

CASC softball team suffers road losses to Rose State; this afternoon's home doubleheader vs. Connors State canceled (NEWLY UPDATED)

MIDWEST CITY — The Carl Albert State College softball team suffered a pair of road losses Tuesday afternoon against Rose State College. The Lady Vikings lost 1-0 in the opener, then dropped the nightcap 9-6.

HEAVENER — The Poteau Pirates are the defending LeFlore County Baseball Tournament champions, while the Spiro Bulldogs are the top seed. They will meet to see who plays for the 2014 county title.
The Pirates defeated the Pocola Indians, while the Bulldogs got past the tournament-host Heavener Wolves by identical 7-1 scores in Tuesday's winner's-bracket semifinals.
The Pirates and the ’Dogs will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday at Poteau High School's Town Creek Park for the right to get to Friday night's title game here at 7 p.m.
