Bandit League teams go 3-1 against Fort Smith Catholic to open season

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Three of the four Bandit League teams posted season-opening wins in last weekend's four-game set with Fort Smith Catholic.
The sixth-grade team posted a 20-6 victory, the fifth-graders a 22-0 win and the fourth-grade a 30-0 victory. The only setback was a 13-7 win by FS Catholic in the third-grade game.

Wister boys sweep Cameron

WISTER — After beating the Cameron Yellowjackets in Saturday night's Howe Wood Bat Tournament finals, the Wister Wildcats not only beat them once but twice in Monday's doubleheader. The ’Cats took the opener 3-2, then handled the ’Jackets 6-1.

The end to the Poteau Lady Pirates' home three-way was great, run-ruling the Sallisaw Lady Black Diamonds 10-0 in four innings. The start, however, wasn't, as the Lady Pirates fell 11-3 in a five-inning, run-rule contest to the Broken Bow Lady Savages.
In the win over Sallisaw, the Lady Pirates jumped out to a 5-0 lead after an inning.
In the loss to Broken Bow, the Lady Savages scored twice in the first inning and five runs in the second inning for a 7-0 lead as each inning was aided by two Poteau errors.

Poteau cross country girls runners-up to Anadarko in Bacone Invitational; Pirates finish 10th in boys team standings

MUSKOGEE — The Poteau Lady Pirates cross country team came in second at the Bacone Invitational on Friday. The Lady Pirates had 77 points for second place, coming in behind team champion Anadarko (62 points).
Four Lady Pirates finished in the top 20, led by Kandace Standridge who was fifth (7:50) in the 2k run. Sheridan Hoyer was 15th (8:18), Kylanna Hardaway 17th (8:29) and Maddison Williamson 18th (8:30).

Heavener cross country girls finish sixth, Wolves seventh at Henryetta Invitational; Johnson, Cruz bring home medals

HENRYETTA — The Heavener Lady Wolves cross country team was sixth in Saturday's Henryetta Invitational with 145 points. Tulsa Cascia Hall won the girls team title with 48 points, followed by host Henryetta (63 points), Seminole (73), Chelsea (91) and Keys (Park Hill) (107).
For the Heavener girls, they had one medalist for finishing in the top 20 as Barbara Johnson was 11th (13:38.97) on the 3,200-meter long course.
Iris Martinez was 39th (15:34.3), Fatima Baez was 56th (16:37.96), Ali Paxton was 63rd (16:53.25) and Brenda Macias was 64th (17:18.43).

Next week will be LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament

It will be County Tournament Week next week, at least the high school version.
The 2014 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Tournament will begin Monday and end Thursday in Panama. The bracket will appear in Saturday's edition.
This year's event would appear to be as wide open as it has been in a while, with half the teams of the 12-team tournament field capable of winning the county title. Will Poteau make it seven straight fast-pitch county titles, or will one of the other teams dethrone the Lady Pirates. Time will tell.

Spiro football team outlasts Stilwell for season-opening win Friday night

STILWELL — Spiro’s Marvin McFerren scored four touchdowns and McKinley Whitfield scored three more to enable the Bulldogs to down the homestanding Stilwell Indians 47-40 Friday night.
Trailing 33-27 at halftime, the Indians took as 34-33 lead with 6:02 left in the third quarter on Colby Huval’s 63-yard touchdown pass from Jaron Vaughn.
The ’Dogs regained the lead on McFerren’s third TD on the night, this one a 10-yard run. After D.T. Neal caught quarterback Whitfield’s pass for the two-point conversion, Spiro had a 41-34 lead.

Stallings scores four TDs as Heavener Wolves down Atoka

Heavener Wolves football coach used a stall tactic — or Stallings, as in Dillan Stallings, tactic — in getting his team a season-opening win over the homestanding Atoka Wampus Cats on Friday night at Phillips Field.
Stallings scored four touchdowns and a two-point conversion to help the Wolves down the Wampus Cats 32-14.

Wister pitcher no-hits Cameron in Howe Wood Bat Tournament to lead Wildcats to championship; Smithville holds off Leflore for third place; Whitesboro beats Howe in consolation finals

HOWE — Wister pitcher Scotty Gibson no-hit the Cameron Yellowjackets to lead the Wildcats to a 2-1 victory to win the 2014 Howe Wood Bat Tournament on Saturday night at Lions Field.
The ’Cats reached the finals with a 7-1 victory over the Leflore Savages in Saturday afternoon’s championship semifinals.
The ’Jackets made the title game with a 4-2 win over the Smithville Braves, who beat the Savages 5-4 in the third-place game.

Wister girls beat host Tushka to win Tushka Tournament on Saturday

TUSHKA — Kati Patterson’s two-out, three-run double propelled the Wister Lady Wildcats to a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the Tushka Lady Tigers to win the Tushka Tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Wildcats beat the Pocola Lady Indians 4-2 in the winner’s-bracket finals and the Rock Creek Lady Mustangs 1-0 in the winner’s-bracket semifinals.
The host Lady Tigers blanked the Lady Indians 3-0 in the loser’s-bracket final after Pocola lost to Wister.
