High school football practice begins Monday; heat always a factor as practice begins

August 8, 2015

This past spring, the area was trying to handle flooding issues and torrential rain. However, as football practice begins Monday, the same ol’ culprit is back — heat.
Handling heat and the problems it causes is always on the minds of football coaches.

Start of practice brings lots of anticipation; Talihina, Pocola teams beginning with ‘Midnight Madness’

August 8, 2015

Just like Christmas morning, the anticipation of a big day at times is so great it cannot be put into words. For football players, Aug. 10 is that day — the first day of football practice.
“Anytime you come upon football season, it’s good,” first-year Poteau coach Forrest Mazey said. “If you have passion for the game, like coaches do, you really don’t work a day in your life. It’s engrained in us.”
Along with Mazey, two other coaches, Panama’s Jeff Broyles [a former Pirate coach] and Bokoshe’s C.J. Burk, begin this season with new teams. That, too, makes for a lot of anticipation.

Instilling basics, doing evaluations big thing in opening practice week

August 8, 2015

Since this week will be the first time since May football players will go through ordinary drills, most of our local coaches are just trying to make sure the players know the basics.
“We’re tired of the weight room. We’re ready to get out on the field and start learning,” Heavener coach Sam Hembree said. “We’re going to work really hard and getting really good at a few things. Until we get good at a few things, we’re not going to elaborate [into more difficult stuff]. We’re going to try to get better running it than they [the opposition] are at stopping it.”

Local football trio, Talihina coach participate Friday night in All-State Game

August 4, 2015

The East team lost Friday’s night’s All-State football game to the West, but that didn’t seem to matter to standouts from Poteau and Talihina, who played in the game at Union-Tuttle Stadium in Tulsa.
Neither did it to Kelly Gravitt, the Talihina coach, who coached the squad in its 27-14 loss.
Gravitt got to have a bonus as two of his players starred in the game. Quarterback Alan Lockhart and defensive end Tucker Trowbridge impacted the game with some big plays.
Poteau lineman Mark Garner also just happened to be playing on the line each time the East got a touchdown.

Playing in All-State Game nice way to cap high school career for Whitesboro Bulldog basketballer

July 31, 2015

Whitesboro’s Blake Blagg-Tidwell recalls how hard it was to come up a game short of a Class B State Tournament appearance — not just oncee, but two consecutive years.
Blagg-Tidwell played as a member of the Small East team in Thursday night’s Small-School All-State Boys Basketball Game at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center in Tulsa. He contributed with a rebound in the East’s 70-68 loss to the West.
Making All-State and having the opportunity to play in the game was a nice consolation for Blagg-Tidwell.

Spiro individual in NASCAR Diversity Internship Program

July 31, 2015

Perhaps with Tri-State Speedway pretty much in his backyard, Spiro's Kent [K.J.] Booze might have toyed with thoughts of getting involved with racing. So, he has.
Booze is participating in the NASCAR Diversity Internship Program, which is a 10-week, paid internship that exposes multicultural undergraduate and graduate students to employment opportunities within America’s top motorsport. He started June 8 and will end his internship Aug. 14.
