Howe teams, Bokoshe girls, Whitesboro teams get wins in EOSC Classic; Bokoshe boys fall

WILBURTON — Several LeFlore County teams posted wins to begin the 2014 Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic on Monday at two sites — EOSC's Claud C. Dunlap Fieldhouse and the Wilburton High School Gym — in Blue Bracket play.
Both Howe teams won big as the Lady Lions won 63-24 over Clayton, while the Lions clawed Indianola 61-13.
Bokoshe will be the Howe girls' next opponent as the Lady Tigers handled Indianola 59-42 and will face the Lady Lions at 7:10 tonight at the Wilburton Gym in the championship semifinals.

Tulsa fires Spiro native Blankenship after second losing season

TULSA (AP) — Tulsa fired coach Bill Blankenship on Monday, three days after the Golden Hurricane wrapped up a second consecutive losing season.
The Golden Hurricane finished 2-10, with a 49-32 home loss to East Carolina on Friday night. Blankenship took over at his alma mater in 2011 after Todd Graham left for Pittsburgh. He went 19-8 in his first two seasons, including a Conference USA championship in 2012.

Heavener Wolves begin season today against Hackett in Hartford Tournament

The Heavener Wolves basketball team will begin their season at 5:30 this afternoon in the Hartford [Ark.] Tournament against Hackett, Ark. The Lady Wolves will play right before them at 4 p.m.
The Wolves were 7-18 last season, and they return four starters from that team.

Pocola basketball teams begin seasons tonight at home against Stigler squads; former Poteau boys coach has debut with his alma mater

The 2014-15 basketball season will begin for Pocola High School tonight with home games against Stigler. The girls will play at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys at 8 p.m.
The Lady Indians, who will be led this season for the first time by longtime boys coach Eric Ladd, were 6-18 last season.
When the boys take the court after the Lady Indians play, the Indians will have a new coach, former Poteau Pirates coach and Pocola High School alum Scott Nelke.

It’s full steam ahead for hoops

Like I said in last week’s column, this ol’ man recharged his batteries since we’re back into high school basketball hot and heavy now.
This week is the first of two tournament weeks for LeFlore County teams. This week is the Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic at both EOSC’s Claud C. Dunlap Fieldhouse and the Wilburton High School Gym for Arkoma, Bokoshe, Howe, Leflore and Whitesboro. Also this week, Heavener’s teams will be in the Pick and Shovel Classic in Hartshorne beginning today, while the same can be said for Heavener’s teams at the Hartford [Ark.] Tournament.

No. 3 South Plains, Texas, routs Carl Albert men

Mairega Clark’s 15 points weren’t enough for the Carl Albert State College Vikings in their 101-70 loss to third-ranked South Plains College, Texas, in the Thanksgiving Classic in Plano, Texas, on Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, OK.

CASC women lose final game at Penn Valley Classic

For the second straight game, Kilah Cummings had a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds. However, it wasn’t enough as the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings lost 86-82 to Livin the Dream in the second and final day of the Penn Valley Classic in Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Vikings will return to action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, OK.
