Arkoma girls, Leflore boys make Gold Bracket title games at EOSC Classic; Lady Savages fall in championship semifinals; Mustangs reach consolation finals

WILBURTON — There will be two LeFlore County teams, the Arkoma Lady Mustangs and the Leflore Savages, trying to win Gold Bracket titles today at the Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic at Claud. C. Dunlap Fieldhouse.
The Lady Mustangs stampeded past the McCurtain Lady Bulldogs 76-47 on Thursday night at EOSC to set up this afternoon's 3 p.m. title game against Buffalo Valley, which downed Leflore 39-32. The Lady Savages and the Lady Mustangs played for third place Friday night at Claud C. Dunlap Fieldhouse.

Poteau girls begin basketball season tonight at McAlester

Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series previewing the Poteau High School basketball teams.

The Poteau Lady Pirates basketball team made it to within two wins of the Class 4A State Tournament, bowing out in the area tournament consolation semifinals to Hilldale.
The Lady Pirates, who were 15-11 last season, will begin their new season on the hardwood tonight as they will travel to meet the McAlester Lady Buffaloes at 6:30 p.m. at Brumley Gym.

Talihina cousins ready to get Golden Tigers into state finals; No. 2 Talihina faces No. 5 Cashion in Class A state semifinals tonight in Glenpool

One year ago, the Talihina Golden Tigers were prepping to meet the Ringling Blue Devils in the Class A state semifinals. The Blue Devils beat the Golden Tigers in that game, but last week Talihina avenged that loss to Ringling with a state quarterfinal road victory.
“It felt great, but it felt even better knowing we got back to the semifinals again,” senior wide receiver/linebacker Ty Trowbridge said. “That’s the main thing.”

Gobble, gobble! I hope y'all had a Happy Thanksgiving

I hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving last week. We had the whole family over on turkey day. After dinner, we all went out to the “Jody Ray Sports Complex” and played ping pong, tether ball, pool and got into a heated badminton match. We watched all the holiday football games, too. Everybody left after we took our annual Thanksgiving Day pictures.
I passed out at 7 p.m. that night. I was exhausted, since i got up at 2:30 a.m. Thanksgiving Day to start cooking. I slept hard, and I didn't know where I was when I awoke! Man, that turkey was powerful.

Whitesboro boys, Howe girls named top seeds for JH LCT

The Whitesboro Bulldogs and the Howe Lady Lions were named the top seeds for next month’s LeFlore County Junior High Tournament at Wednesday night’s seeding meeting at Shady Point, which is this season’s tournament host team. The JH County Tournament will be Jan. 5-10.

WILBURTON — In a game that could very well determine how their seeding will go come this month’s seeding meeting for the 2015 LeFlore County Tournament, the Whitesboro Bulldogs got an edge on the Howe Lions.
Whitesboro’s Blake Blagg-Tidwell hit a basket with 4.5 seconds left to lift the ’Dogs to a 33-31 victory over the Lions in the championship semifinals of the Blue Bracket of the Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic on Wednesday night at the Wilburton High School Gym.

Heavener boys beat Oden, Ark., for first win of basketball season

HARTFORD, Ark. — The Heavener Wolves basketball team got its first win of the season Wednesday night, beating Oden, Ark., 67-28 in the Gary Ford Invitational. Unlike most tournaments that have a consolation championship game, this event does not have one. Thus, the Wolves have no more games in the tournament.

Pirates young, athletic this basketball season under new head coach

The Poteau Pirates basketball team made it to the Class 4A Area Tournament before its season ended at 12-14. They’re hoping for bigger and better things when the 2014-15 season gets started at 8 p.m. Friday with a road game against the McAlester Buffaloes at Brumley Gym.

NEO teams sweep Carl Albert

Getting 24 points from Alyssa Banks wasn’t enough for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 73-72 overtime loss to the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College Golden Norse on Tuesday night in Miami, Okla.
Getting 18 points from Mairega Clark and 16 points from Chris Bates wasn’t enough for the Vikings in their 93-81 loss to NEO.
The CASC teams will return home tonight to entertain Seminole State at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse. The women’s game will be at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 8 p.m.

McDonald Pigskin Picks winner for second straight week, fifth time overall

Russ McDonald won the Poteau Daily News' Pigskin Picks Contest for the second straight week, for the fifth time this season and the fourth time outright. He was he only contestant to go 10-2 in last week's contest. He earned $25 for his victory.
