Two local softball players make All-State, with another named an All-State alternate; Slow-Pitch All-State Games slated for June 20 at University of Oklahoma (EDITED)

Two LeFlore County slow-pitch softball players got the ultimate honor of being named an All-Stater.
Heavener's Makayla Cheek and Pocola's Madison Hudkins were named All-Staters.
Cheek will be on the Large East, while Hudkins will be on the Middle East.
Cheek's teammate, Lexi Moody, is an alternate for the Large East team.
The Slow-Pitch All-State Games will take place June 20 at the University of Oklahoma.

New Poteau coach likes where his new team is at as spring practice ended Friday

While spring football practice began last week for the Poteau Pirates, new coach Forrest Mazey could not be present as he was putting the final touches on his departure from Mangum and the birth of his third son.
However, the new coach was present this week, and he liked what he saw in spring practice, which ended Friday afternoon.
This week, Mazey basically tried to mesh his concepts with the current Pirates’ system of doing things, which he said was a success.

Heavener looks good in spring action against Wilburton, Keys (Park Hill)

The Heavener Wolves wrapped up their 2015 spring football practice with a three-way scrimmage with Wilburton and Keys (Park Hill) on Friday morning at Harvey Stadium.
While the Heavener No. 2s didn’t score, the No. 1s did. Quarterback Trey Grubbs went up the middle against Keys (Park Hill) for about a 40-yard TD.
To end the three-way, Heavener and Willburton played a more game-like situation, and the Wolves scored with their No. 1s on about a 60-yard scamper by Luke McGee.

Poteau Sports Hall of Fame inducts Class of 2015 Thursday night; next induction class will be May 2018

As the Poteau Pirates of yesteryears began to assemble for the 2015 Athletic Hall of Fame, it was just amazing to hear how their yardage gained had swollen to new height, how their fastball had gained speed and how the sprinters’ time would rival Usaine Bolt in his prime. One could just set back and revel in hearing the great stories of times past.
The All-School Reunion for Poteau High occurs every three years, and the Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies usually precedes the reunion.
There were 11 were inducted into the 2015 Poteau High School Hall of Fame. Those inducted were:

New bleachers make Heavener gym more enjoyable site to watch hoops; new mechanics make moving new bleaches, side goals much easier

It may not look like much, but it truly was. Anyone who went to the Heavener gym to watch basketball this past season quickly noticed a new addition — new bleachers with seats, as opposed to the old wooden bleacher seats of the past.

Pocola girls beat Stratford in state quarterfinals, but lose to eventual state champion Washington in semifinals

SHAWNEE — The good news for the Pocola Lady Indians softball team was it finally got to play its Class 4A State Tournament at the Ballfields at Firelake, and even won its state quarterfinal game 14-2 over Stratford.
However, the Lady Indians' season came to an end with a 10-0 loss in the state semifinals to eventual state champion Washington. Pocola finished this spring at 23-15.

First it was the Poteau Pirates baseball team playing the waiting game on completing their Class 4A Regional Tournament, that started May 5 and was suspended by rain and saw the Pirates wait about a week before resuming.
Now, it’s the Pocola Lady Inidans’ turn.

Poteau hires new football coach Friday afternoon

With spring drills beginning Monday, the Poteau Pirates football team has a new leader.
Forrest Mazey was hired Friday at a special meeting of the Poteau Public Schools Board to replace Greg Werner, who left to take the coaching job with the Van Buren, Ark., Pointers.
