CASC softball team begins 2015 season Monday afternoon; Carl Albert Festival next weekend

The 2015 softball season will begin Monday afternoon for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings as they will play a road doubleheader at noon Monday against Oklahoma Wesleyan in Bartlesville.
“I don’t know if we’re ready to play, but we’re sure tired of practicing,” CASC coach David Holt said. “I’m really looking forward to it. We have high expectations this year, from the coaches and the players. We’re anxious to get started.”

SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs got off to a fast start, then held off the Vian Wolverines for a 71-54 victory Thursday night at the Spiro Multipurpose Gym.
The ’Dogs jumped out to a 15-0 lead en route to a 23-5 advantage at the end of the opening period.
The Bulldogs were never headed, but the Wolverines cut the deficit to 11 points at 54-43 in the early stages of the final period. However, Vian was unable to ever get the Spiro lead under double digits.

WHITESBORO — The Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs got back to their winning ways, and did so in a big way, with a 67-18 rout of the Panola Lady Bearcats on Thursday night at Steve Linker Gymnasium.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 25-0 lead after a period and never looked back.
Bokoshe 54, McCurtain 48: In McCurtain, the Lady Tigers got out to a 15-5 lead after one quarter and never lost their lead, although the Lady Bulldogs did outscore them 43-39 over the final three periods.

CASC baseball teams splits season-opening twinbill against University of the Ozarks JV; Vikings will play home openers this weekend against Barton County, Kan.

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. — The Carl Albert State College baseball team split its season-opening road doubleheader against the University of the Ozarks junior varsity Tuesday afternoon.
The Vikings took the nightcap 14-4 after losing the opener 5-2.
The Vikings will play their home openers Saturday and Sunday at Ival Goodman Field against Barton County, Kan. Saturday's twinbill will begin at 11:30 a.m., while Sunday's doubleheader will start at noon.

Ninth annual Junior He-Man PPK Competition took place Saturday

We had a full house for the ninth annual Junior He-Man Punt, Pass and Kick Competition on Saturday at “The Jody Ray Sports Complex.”
In the age 13-16 division, Micaela Bickford won with 32 points to earn $100, with Javan Self second (31 points, $75) and Lane Denis third (25, $50). Bickford won the Most Improved Athlete award and the Read-and-Recognition award, while Dennis won the “Got-A-Man-Down” Award as well as winning the tire throw. Self won the field goals title.

As gifted athletically as Talihina High School senior Alan Lockhart is, it wasn’t so much if he would get a chance to play collegiate athletics but in what sport. It truly wasn’t as hard a decision as one might have thought.
Lockhart, who played quarterback and defensive back for the Golden Tigers Class A state semifinal team the past two seasons, signed a football letter of intent with Southeastern Oklahoma State University in a signing ceremony Thursday afternoon on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.

In the second game of the season, Pocola slotback DeAundre Wilkins suffered a lower leg injury against the Poteau junior varsity Sept. 11 at Costner Stadium. Despite not having as much playing time as he would have liked his senior season, Wilkins, who also played safety on defense, saw his playing career get extended as he signed with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

Poteau wrestlers win final dual of season, get road win over McAlester Buffaloes

McALESTER — The Poteau Pirates wrestling team ended its regular season on a high note Tuesday night with a 48-32 win over the homestanding McAlester Buffaloes.
The Pirates will be off until the Class 4A Regional Tournament Feb. 20-21 at Catoosa.
