Thursday’s High School Softball Roundup

September 13, 2014

INDIANOLA — The good news for the Leflore Lady Savages is they will play for the title of the Indianola Tournament. The bad news is they will have to wait a week in order to do so.
The Lady Savages beat Wilson (Henryetta) 2-0 and Pittsburg 5-4 on Thursday to reach the tournament finals.
However, Friday’s rain canceled the last half of the weekend event. The Lady Savages will have to wait until next Saturday to play for the championship.
Red Oak 8, Panama 0; Tahlequah 9, Panama 2: In Red Oak, the Lady Razorbacks suffered a pair of losses in a three-way.

State's best motocross riders come to RaceDay Park Mx

September 12, 2014

The Oklahoma State Race Series had its final race of 2014 last weekend at RaceDay Park Mx, located between Poteau and Cameron on Oklahoma Highway 112. There were 246 riders, and you may have seen all the campers in the parking lot had you driven by the track. It looked like the parking lot at Jamatt RV.
More than 1,000 people were at the event, counting spectators and participants, and they spent the weekend in town, eating all over the place.

Poteau Pirates look for first win of 2014 tonight at Van Buren; game time for tonight’s game moved up to 7 p.m.

September 12, 2014

When looking at the Poteau Pirates’ non-District 4A-4 portion of their football schedule, one could see that it was loaded with three larger schools. The Pirates will take on the second of those three teams tonight when they travel to meet the Van Buren [Ark.] Pointers at 7 p.m., which is a 30-minute earlier start than originally schedule.

Bokoshe Tigers begin District C-4 play tonight, welcome Bowlegs Bison to town

September 12, 2014

The Bokoshe Tigers football team is essentially starting the season at 0-0, despite losing 46-0 in their home opener last week to county rival Arkoma in a game ended at the 9:54 mark of the third quarter due to the 45-point mercy rule.
The Tigers (0-1) will begin District C-4 play tonight as they entertain the Bowlegs Bison at 7:30 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
Despite the rough start to the season, the players have been very upbeat as they prepared for the Bison.

Spiro welcomes Muldrow for battle of Bulldogs in tonight’s home opener

September 12, 2014

The good news for the Spiro Bulldogs was they won last week’s football season opener 47-40 over Stilwell.
However, the not-as-good news for the ’Dogs that night was they had to hold on for dear life to get that victory, scoring a touchdown in the final period and keeping Stilwell out of the end zone on four plays inside the Spiro 10.
“We’re proud of the fact that we won, but there are a lot of things that we’re not satisfied with,” Spiro coach Chris Bunch said. “There was a reason we were in the position we were in. We’ve got to get those things corrected.”

Heavener Wolves ready for challenge of Vian Wolverines; tonight’s game moved to Vian due to Harvey Stadium track construction

September 12, 2014

There’s nothing like a strong finish, the Heavener Wolves football team had just that in its season opener last Friday night at Atoka.
Trailing 14-12, the Wolves scored the final 20 points of the game en route to a 32-14 win over the homestanding Wampus Cats.
“We started slow, but we came back out in the second and did what we were supposed to do,” first-year Heavener coach Sam Hembree said. “We were plagued with penalties in the first half, but in the second half, we were a lot cleaner — and looked a lot better.”

Senior receiver/defensive back says Pirates will bounce back; game time vs. Van Buren, Ark., moved up to 7 p.m. Friday

September 11, 2014

The Poteau Pirates, last season’s Class 4A state runners-up, did not get to start the 2014 season as they would have liked, losing to the Alma [Ark.] Airedales in last Thursday night’s Hooten’s Classic game at Fort Smith [Ark.] Northside High School.
However, Poteau senior wide receiver/defensive back Dayton Martinez has no doubt the Pirates will bounce back.
“It was very frustrating,” Martinez said about the Alma loss. “I think we can do a lot better than that. With all the practice we’ve been doing, it’s helped. I think we’ll come back.”
