Poteau wrestlers win final dual of season, get road win over McAlester Buffaloes

McALESTER — The Poteau Pirates wrestling team ended its regular season on a high note Tuesday night with a 48-32 win over the homestanding McAlester Buffaloes.
The Pirates will be off until the Class 4A Regional Tournament Feb. 20-21 at Catoosa.

Stilwell teams sweep Poteau to spoil its Senior Night

The Stilwell High School basketball teams spoiled Senior Night for the Poteau squads Tuesday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
The Lady Indians survived a second-half rally by the Lady Pirates to post a 67-50 victory, then the Indians were too much for the Pirates as they left town 71-29 victors.

LEFLORE — The Whitesboro Bulldogs took advantage of an illness-ridden Leflore Savage team to earn a hard-fought 48-42 victory Tuesday night on Nadine Carpenter Court.
The Bulldogs led 14-11 after a period, which became a 24-17 halftime advantage.
The Savages used a 14-9 third quarter to cut the deficit to 33-31 going into the final period, but the ’Dogs outscored them 15-11 in the fourth quarter to hang on for the win.

WISTER — The Wister Lady Wildcats got a home victory Tuesday night over the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets by the score of 38-30.
The Lady ’Cats jumped out to a 12-4 lead after a quarter and never lost the lead.
Arkoma 64, Panama 29: In Arkoma, the Lady Mustangs jumped out to a 17-4 lead after a period and never looked back.
Leflore 46, Whitesboro 22: On Nadine Carpenter Court in Leflore, the Lady Savages jumped out to an 18-4 lead after a period and never were headed.

Poteau offensive lineman inks with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M

Just how far along the football road Poteau offensive lineman Mark Garner will travel will be up to him, but he's gone the next step.
Garner signed a letter of intent with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in a ceremony Wednesday morning inside the high school.

Spiro duo sign football letters of intent Wednesday afternoon; Whitfield inks with Tulsa; Neal heading to NEO

After receiving a plethora of football offers, Spiro quarterback/defensive back McKinley Whitfield decided to stay close to home.
Whitfield signed a football letter of intent with the University of Tulsa in a signing ceremony Wednesday afternoon inside the Spiro Multipurpose Gym.
However, Whitfield wasn't the only Bulldog to punch his ticket to the next level. Spiro receiver/defensive back D.T. Neal signed in a separate signing ceremony with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College just before Whitfield inked his letter with Tulsa.

ORES playoffs will begin Saturday; Fanshawe Division IV playoff host school

While the 13 LeFlore County high school basketball teams haven't started their playoffs yet, the four county Organization of Rural Elementary Schools [ORES] schools will begin their postseason play on Saturday, at least most of them.
In Division IV, Fanshawe will be a host site to begin the playoffs. The Lady Grizzlies and the Monroe Eagles got byes into Monday's second-round games. The Lady Grizzlies will play the winner of the Monroe-Whitefield game, which will be at noon Saturday in Fanshawe, at 6 p.m. Monday in Fanshawe.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Several Poteau Youth Wrestling Club members participated at the 2015 Novice State Tournament, which took place last weekend at State Fair Arena.

The LeFlore County Soccer Association will have a coaches meeting Feb. 17.
Practices will start the week of Feb. 19, with games starting Feb. 28.

The second annual Hungry Like the Wolf 5k/10k fun run/walk and two-mile walk will take place beginning at noon Feb. 21 at Blues Park in Heavener. Race-day registration and packet pick-up will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Packets may also be picked up from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday at Heavener High School.
The entry fee is $20 per runner until Feb. 13. From Feb. 14 until race day, the entry fee increases to $25 per runner.
