2011 Balloonfest rolls into town tonight

October 20, 2011

The Poteau Balloonfest is here, or at
least it will be as of tomorrow!
Armbands for the event will be on sale
at the chamber until 4 p.m. on Friday.
Armbands are your admission to what
promises to be the biggest Balloonfest
The LeFlore County Fairgrounds will
play host to this year’s Balloonfest, as
the size of the event has grown exponentially
since its inception. PDN is going to
attempt to give you a rundown of all the
activities taking place this weekend, so
hold on to your seats.
Included in the price of your armband
is admission to the mud pit races at 2
p.m. on Saturday. Watch from the bleachers
or the comfort of your own lawn
chair as 40 drivers compete for the $5,000
purse. There will also be a children’s
power wheels race at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Bring your child and their power wheel
car for a chance to win glory and prizes.
Admission to the Saturday concert is
$10 for general admission and $15 for
reserved seating. Also on Saturday, there
will be tethered balloon rides in two twohour
intervals, weather permitting.
Tickets for tethered balloon rides are $10
and can be purchased at the State Farm
booth at the fairgrounds. Tickets to ride
the “Mean Machine” monster truck are
$7 and can be purchased at the entrance
to the Mean Machine.
Helicopter rides are also available this
year, from 4 p.m. until dark on Friday,
and from 9 a.m. until dark on Saturday.
Helicopter rides cost $36. Look for signs
directing you to the helicopter pad inside
the Balloonfest.
If helicopters don’t tickle your fancy,
covered wagon rides at the Balloonfest
are free and D&D Cowboy Cadillac carriage
rides are available with your donation.
Barbecue can be purchased from the
contestants in the Bikes, Balloons, and
Barbecue contest on Saturday. There will
be lots of other types of food available as
well. The bike portion of the contest will
be held Friday night in the fairgrounds
arena starting at 6 p.m.
Tonight only, Balloonfest will play
host to a complete carnival. Carnival
armbands are $15 and will allow the
bearer to ride all carnival rides. That is
the only activity going on tonight.
Carnival rides will operate from 7 p.m.
until 11 p.m. on Friday and carnival armbands
will be $20. Saturday, tickets must
be purchased in order to ride carnival
The Little Mr. and Ms. Balloonfest
will be at noon on Saturday. Contestants
must be registered by 10:30 a.m.
Contestants may pre-register at River
Valley Cosmetology.
America’s Best Frisbee dogs will perform
on Friday from 6 p.m. until 6:30
p.m. and from 11 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on
Due to the large size of this year’s
event, Balloonfest organizers are asking that attendees allow
for an hour in order to get into this year’s Balloonfest between
the commute from the parking lot and the lines at the gate.
“This is a huge area of events, so be prepared to walk all
over the grounds to see all the attractions.” says Karen Wages,
Poteau Chamber of Commerce CEO.
Parking will be allowed at the PARC parking lot, Carl
Albert State College, and the Poteau Industrial Park. Shuttles
will run from CASC and the Industrial Park and a courtesy
van will ferry disabled guests to and from the PARC parking
