The blue bridge in Wister soon may be history after the Oklahoma Department of Transportation completed an alignment study.
According to ODOT, the consideration to make improvements at the Caston Creek crossing on U.S. Highway 270 about one mile south of the U.S. Highway 271 junction was a culmination of public meeting participation, federal and state agency input and a completed alignment study.
During a public meeting held in Wister on June 26, 2012, four alternative alignments were presented based on the results of a previous alignment study.
The four options include alternative routes that would allow the roadway to remain open during construction of the new bridge.
The decided-upon option, according to ODOT, will allow the highway to remain open, had a reduced cost affect, acceptable bridge limitations and is environmentally sound.
The proposed route will take traffic west of town then south to connect with U.S. Highway 270 north of Lake Wister State Park.
According to ODOT, the bridge project has been scheduled to begin in 2016 with the first phases of preparation to include right-of-way and utility relocation.
