1895 to Present

The history of newspapers in Poteau begins in 1895 when the Poteau Ledger was owned by H.J. Duke with Ed Hooker as the editor. Plans for the first printed edition were dashed when the news stock did not arrive on time. Not to be discouraged, the men borrowed some wrapping paper from a local store and the news met its first deadline.

R.S. Bridgman was the publisher of the Poteau News for several years during the earliest days of the paper. Bridgman sold the Poteau News in 1901.
The first issue on file with the Oklahoma Historical Society is the one of Sept. 5, 1907 and carried on its masthead the name of W.W. Denson as “editor and proprietor.”

In the Jan. 9, 1908 issue Robert L. Kidd's name appeared on the masthead along with that of W.W. Denson. In October of the same year Kidd assumed ownership. Kidd sold the Poteau News to Bert McCausey in 1940.

Kidd's sons, Bob Lee Kidd Jr. and James Park Kidd, became owners of the LeFlore County Sun, competing with their father's old newspaper. They also acquired the Poteau News.

The Enterprise Group, Inc. purchased the newspaper in 1978. At the time the Poteau news was published on Wednesdays and the LeFlore County Sun was printed as a weekend paper. The two combined and the LeFlore County News and Sun became a bi-weekly publication.
Francis Stipe and Jim Monroe became the owners of the Poteau News and Sun in 1986.

It was under their ownership that the distribution was increased from a bi-weekly to a tri-weekly.

In 1990 the Poteau News and Sun was the first Oklahoma newspaper in more than a decade to make the commitment to take on the responsibilities of a daily newspaper. Thus was the beginning of the Poteau Daily News and Sun.

Indian Nations Communications continued to own and operate the newspaper until1991 when it was sold to Jim McGinnis of Minnesota.
LeFlore County Newspapers, LLC, purchased the Poteau publication from McGinnis in 1992 and then sold the business back to Murphy/McGinnis in 1994.
Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc. of Birmingham, Ala., purchased the PDN&S in 1999.

Horizon Publishing Management Services of Marion, Ill., purchased the Poteau Daily News in 2003.

Today, the Poteau Daily News continues its responsibilities to the citizens of LeFlore County as “We Cover the County.”
