Allan A. Guinn of Spanaway, Wash., formerly of Poteau, died Sunday, June 24, 2012.Â Allan, better known by his nickname â€śJiggsâ€ť as he grew up on Lus Holtonâ€™s big farm near Cameron during the Depression, was born on July 5, 1925, to Bert Sr. and Mable V. (Pool) Guinn in Poteau.
In 1945 at the age of 18 Allan enlisted in the U.S. Army and did his basic training at Fort Chaffee, Ark. He had been in Germany three days when WWII came to an end.Â He was in the Army 20 years as a cook, and during that time he was sent to the Korean Conflict.Â After mustering out at Fort Lewis, Wash., he worked as head cook at the Officerâ€™s NCO Club at McCord Air Force Base at Tacoma, Wash., for over 20 years before he retired.Â Allan never met a stranger and could converse with anyone.Â Allan ws preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda Swanson; his only brother, Bert Guinn Jr.; and a dear cousin, Junior Bradley.
He is survived by his wife, Toribia Doris Guinn of the home; a daughter, Betty Jean Thornton; and son, Bert Guinn III, both of Mentor, Ohio; his stepchildren, Harvey Perez, Michael Gearhart, Marilyn Neroni, all of Washington, and George Perez of Fla.; and his only sister, Betty Adams of Poteau; many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 29, at Mountain View Garden Chapel in Tacoma with burial in Mountain View Memorial Park in Lakewood, Wash.Â Mountain View Funeral Home of Tacoma is in charge of arrangements and services.
