Area blood drive set for Tuesday

July 5, 2013

The need for blood doesn’t take a vacation. Yet, fewer people typically donate during the summer, according to Oklahoma Blood Institute.
Walmart in Poteau has stepped up to help with a blood drive from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Anyone who is healthy and 16 years or older* is encouraged to give.
Each donor will receive two free tickets to the Oklahoma City Zoo, a “Feel Fierce” T-shirt, free health screenings and Donor Rewards points.
“For patients in need of blood, there’s no summer vacation,” said Dr. John Armitage, OBI president and chief executive. “That’s why it’s crucial that blood donors take just an hour to donate blood. The lives of our friends, co-workers and neighbors may depend on it.”
Any donor can forgo the T-shirt. In turn, funds so designated will then be contributed to Global Blood Foundation for supplies and equipment for blood centers in poor countries.
Oklahoma Blood Institute is the eighth-largest nonprofit blood center in America, providing all blood for patients in 144 medical facilities across Oklahoma, including Choctaw Nation Health Care System.
Appointments are not necessary.
