Area DAV recognizes local volunteers

April 29, 2013

Disabled American Veterans Chapter 63 salutes it members and supporters in honor of National Volunteer Month.
DAV volunteers have has logged more than 5,000 volunteer hours, according to chapter Cmdr. Charlie Horsley.
DAV volunteers have aided residents who have lost everything to fires, helped with the Thanksgiving and Christmas meals at the school and presented Veterans Day programs at schools and nursing homes, Horsley said..
The chapter has a float in both the Veterans Day and Christmas parades and provides a watermelon party for the Veterans Center in Talihina five to six times a year.
Chapter members have replaced more 300 torn or faded U.S. flags around LeFlore County helped repair the large flag across from Burger King in Poteau at a cost of $40 instead of the city purchasing a new one for $560.00. This has being done for the last seven years at a savings to the city of $8,000 in tax dollars, Horsley.
A van donated four years ago is used to take veterans to medical appointments in Oklahoma, Muskogee City, Little Rock, Ark., Fort Smith, Ark., and Fayetteville, Ark., with the only expense to the veterans being gas cost. A large VA bus acquired in July 2012 has logged some 10,000 with more than 400 hours by volunteer drivers. This is done at no cost to the veterans.
The new headquarters on north Broadway is open five days a week, six hours a day helping veterans and families with questions and claim information for the disabilities from their military service, Horsley said.
