Area war memorial vandalized

May 28, 2013

A memorial dedicated to prisoners of war and veterans missing in action located at Oakland Cemetery in Poteau has been vandalized.
According to co-designer of the memorial, Jim Berngen, of Poteau, he and several fellow motorcycle riders, visited the site Sunday and all was fine. They returned on Monday to find damage done to the tribute. The group found what looked like bullet holes in the soldier and the headstone.
Police were notified of the vandalism and are currently investigating the crime.
