Although the high school football playoffs will not start until Nov. 9, for all intents and purposes they have now started for the Arkoma Mustangs (1-4, 1-3 in District C-4).
“The playoffs have started for us,” said Mark Weatherton, Arkoma's coach. “We need to win or we're probably done.”
The Mustangs lost their third straight district game last Friday night at Mustang Field, falling 53-8 to Southwest Covenant.
“They're a good team,” Weatherton said. “They have good speed, and run a lot of different formations at you offensively. We didn't handle that well. We're so young. When we go in practice, they get it, but when they see it in the game, we're not picking up on it. I thought we had a good week of practice (going into that game), and I was disappointed on how we executed on both sides of the ball.”
The Mustangs will try to end their three-game losing streak at 7:30 p.m. this Friday with a homecoming game against the Midway Chargers at Mustang Field.
The Chargers (1-4, 1-3) got their first win of the season last Friday night, beating Bokoshe 52-6 at home. They present a big problem — literally — for the Mustangs.
“They're not as good as some of the teams we've faced, but they're pose a tremendous problem,” Weatherton said. “They're big up front. They have a couple of guys who are 300 (pounds) on the front line. They're big in the backfield. Their fullback is 5-10, 220 and their other back is 6-0, 240. They're definitely going to be the biggest team we've seen so far. Their size is frightening.”
