Arthur Benjamin Bethell

Arthur Benjamin Bethell of Poteau died Jan. 20, 2014, in Poteau. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Franklin Bethell; mother, Maud “Mattie” Bethell; two brothers, Noel and Arnold Bethell; two sisters, Melba Treadway and Mildred Hamby; a daughter, Sharon Bethell Reasoner, and his special dog, Smokie.
He volunteered for the regular U.S. Army in October 1940, and served to September 1945 (WWII and Korean War, five battles, Normandy to central Europe). He was awarded the Silver Service Star and four GCMs. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps 1937 to 1939 at Stapplahoma, where his duties were: construction work, roads, bridges, telephone linesman, blacksmith and he supervised installation of telephone lines and a lookout tower on Winding Stair Mountain. Art also served in the military for 20 years as a non-commissioned officer specializing in supplies. While in Korea he pursued his education and had a second 20-years civil service career which culminated when he became a supply systems analyst at the Sacramento Army Depot in California.
Art was a member of the Church of Christ in Summerfield and also a member of the Church of Christ North in Poteau. 
He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Helen Collas Bethell of the home; his dog, Goldie; his sister, Dorothy Davis of Sun City, Calif.; his son-in-law Richard Reasoner of Mexia, Texas; four grandchildren, James Reasoner, Scott Reasoner both of Mexia, Texas, Rashay Mathews of Codedge, Texas, and Christylinette Reasoner of Mexia, Texas; his lifelong friend Robert Vick; and numerous dear friends and relatives.
Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at the North Poteau Church of Christ with Pastor Don Cherry officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in the Fort Smith, Ark., National Cemetery. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Manor Funeral Home, Poteau.
