Editor’s note: This is part two of a feature series highlighting single mothers who overcame obstacles to pursue their college education. It was created in celebration of Carl Albert State College’s upcoming Moms2College event. Dashing around Disneyland with her children last year, Jennifer Billingsley had a realization: all the hard work had paid off. She remembers pushing hard toward her degree, struggling through long days and nights at work and school with two infants at home. It seemed incredibly difficult at the time, but now she is thankful she persisted. |

Did you know that parents are can be fined and even arrested if their children do not attend school? According to Oklahoma law, “It shall be unlawful for a parent, guardian, or other person having custody of a child who is over the age of five years and under the age of 18 years, to neglect or refuse to cause or compel such child to attend and comply with the rules of some public, private or other school, unless other means of education are provided for the full term the schools of the district are in session or the child is excused as provided in this section.” |
