Bond set in animal cruelty case

December 15, 2011

Albert and William McReynolds have been released on bond following their arrest for animal cruelty.

Two men who were arrested Tuesday evening in what LeFlore County Sheriff Bruce Curnutt described as the most horrific case of animal cruelty he had ever seen, were released on bond Wednesday.
Albert McReynolds, 66, and William McReynolds, 18, both of Smithville, were being held in the LeFlore County Detention Center for animal cruelty stemming from multiple dead and emaciated animals found at their residence on Tuesday.
According to Sheriff Bruce Curnutt, his department received a call Tuesday evening in reference to the McReynolds' animals in need of care. When deputies arrived at the residence they discovered dead horses, dogs, hogs and additional animal body parts lying around the property.
“This case is beyond cruel,” said Curnutt. “It is just gruesome. You don't treat animals this way. It looked like a scene from a horror movie.”
According to the Sheriff, deputies found a total of six dead horses, two dead hogs and two dead dogs when they arrived.
“One of the horse carcasses had been placed inside a hog pen for the hogs to feed on, while another carcass was lying in the yard with a dog chained to it,” said Curnutt. “In all my years I have never seen such cruelty.”
According to Curnutt, two additional horses that were found on the property that were so emaciated that they were unable to stand. The department was forced to put down one of the animals and the other succumbed to it's illness overnight.
During the McReynolds 1:30 court appearance Wednesday afternoon in front of Special Judge Jeff Singer, the judge decided to postpone setting bond for the two men until he had more information in the case.
A second hearing was held after Singer received a probable cause affidavit in the case and bond was set at $15,000 for each man.
Both have been released on bond from the LeFlore County Detention Center awaiting their next court appearance.
