CUSHING — The good news is there will be a LeFlore County OK Kids peewee baseball team playing for a state title tonight. However, there won't be a second local team in the championship game, this year anyway.
The Poteau Buccaneers stayed perfect for the 2012 OK Kids PeeWee State Tournament with a 15-3 rout of the Coleman BRW Thursday night in the winner's-bracket final.
The Buccaneers will play at 6 p.m. tonight for the state title, but they won't get to play their fellow Poteau team for it.
The Poteau Rebels suffered a 6-0 loss to the Shawnee Spikes in Thursday night's loser's-bracket quarterfinals to be eliminated from the tournament.
The Spikes and the host Cushing Tigers, who edged the Clinton White 5-4 in another elimination game Thursday afternoon, played in Friday night's loser's-bracket semifinal, with the winner facing Coleman in the loser's-bracket final.
The winner of Coleman's game will play the Buccaneers at 6 p.m. tonight for the state title, with the if-game slated for 8 p.m. tonight if necessary.
In the Buccaneers' win, Easton Francis pitched a complete-game, four-inning victory, and he aided his own cause by going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.
Offensively, Mason Barcheers was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Chance Timms was 2-for-3 with three RBIs — all coming on his three-run home run.
In the Rebels' loss, the Spikes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, then added a single run in the second inning and three more runs in the fifth inning.
The hard-luck Rebel pitcher loser was Matthew Holzhammer, who struck out five batters in a complete-game outing.
Holzhammer, Will Hammons and Jaxon Dorsey were all 1-for-2 for the Rebels, who were making their second straight state title game as won the 2011 OK Kids Coach-Pitch State Tournament. They will return eight of their nine players for next season.
