Busy with Bandit League; Balloonfest, barbecue next weekend

October 14, 2011

Here is the Poteau sixth-grade Bandit League team. Front row, from left — Jamison Shackleford, Rodney Duran, Alex Tausawn, Chris Wood, Dale Marshall, Cody Cook, Juan Martinez, Austin Brooks, Landon Troutman and Johnathan Rice. Middle Row — Seth Ryan, Ty Keener, Jared Williams, Kale Barcheers, Clifford Ellis, Mathew Alvarado, Jerod Vineyard, Wyatt Darby and Daulton Brock. Back row — Coaches Cody Barcheers, Eric Vineyard, Chris Keener, Stewart Ryan and Michael Barcheers.

It was a rough week for my Poteau third-grade Bandit League football team, but it's been a fun time.
Three of our four teams will be in action Saturday in Stilwell, with the sixth-grade game beginning at 2 p.m., followed by the third-grade contest at 3 p.m. and the fourth-grade game at 4 p.m. There will not be a fifth-grade contest this week. The sixth-graders will put their undefeated streak on the line as they have not lost a game in their Bandit League careers.
I've had parents ask me when will The Poteau Daily News run their team photographs. So, I decided to write a short column and get them on my page in today's edition.
Poteau Balloonfest Coming Next Weekend
The Poteau Balloonfest will be next Friday and Saturday. The event will be from 4 to 9 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
I'm in charge of the barbecue cooking contest. The categories are brisket (beef), ribs or pork butts (pork) and chicken. If you would like to enter, call the Poteau Chamber of Commerce at (918) 647-9178 or the “Jody Ray Fishing Hotline” at (918) 649-7387. You will be able to bring your own cookers and set up beginning at 8 a.m. next Friday. The judging will begin at 5 p.m. next Friday, with this year's judges being Darren Bobb from Channel 5, Bryan Fields and Danny “The Doctor of” Love. There's no entry fee, and you'll be able to sell anything you cook to the public — everybody loves barbecue!
I will also have the “Egg-a-Nator” at the event. What is this? You can buy eggs and throw at some of our coaches — and I'll be wearing all Oklahoma State orange. So, all of you Oklahoma Sooner fans can tee off on me. The cost is $1 per egg or $10 for a dozen. All the proceeds will benefit the Poteau third-grade Bandit League Football team which I help coach. It sounds like I may get some egg on my face.
FYI — I've got goggles, thanks to my favorite sister-in-law, Stacey Bogle. Thanks, Stacy.
Now, let's party!
