Carl Albert baseball team begins Region II Tournament this afternoon in Bartlesville; Vikings get Redlands Cougars for fifth time in a week

May 10, 2012

After a “grind” of a season, as Carl Albert State College Baseball Coach Mark Pollard calls the regular season, the postseason has arrived for the Vikings as they will begin play in the Region II Tournament, which begins today and ends Sunday at Bartlesville's Doenges Ballpark.
The Vikings (37-19) will meet a team they have played for the last four games of the regular season — the Redlands Community College Cougars. The Vikings and the Cougars do battle at noon today.
“It ought to give us confidence,” said Pollard, whose team took three of four games from Redlands, including a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at Ival Goodman Field. “Down here (on Saturday), I thought we played really well. We've won 10 out of our last 13. We're excited. The kids have been here for nine months, and they know at the end of nine months is the Region II Tournament. We're looking forward to it. We need to win that first one because if we get beat, the way the six-team bracket is drawn up the loser will face the top seed — and that's a tough draw. Our plan is to go take care of business. We're excited because we know if we can get hot like we did last year, we'll score some runs — and I think we'll have a real good chance (to win the tournament). They know what's on the line.”
Region II Tournament Today's Schedule
At Bartlesville
Carl Albert vs. Redlands, noon; Western Oklahoma State vs. Northern Oklahoma College-Enid, 3:30 p.m.; Murray State vs. Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa, 7 p.m.
Editor's Note — The tournament is double elimination, with the title game set for 1 p.m. Sunday and the if-game at 4 p.m. Sunday.
