Carl Albert State College’s newly formed Viking Golf Club is preparing for their first match in March.
The club began last semester when a group of students approached Hank Austin about the possibility of a golf club at CASC. According to Austin, who is the sponsor of the club, he made a proposal to the college and then to Choctaw Country Club’s Board of Directors. Choctaw Country Club has agreed to be the home course, and has generously offered a deal for CASC student golfers to play at the course.
With a current roster of 17 CASC students, they play on Tuesdays and Thursdays, weather permitting.
Austin explained this is a club sport, but will compete with some two-year collegiate teams, including a match in March at Seminole. Five to seven players from the CASC club will be allowed to go to each match.
“Our goal is that in the future the club might gain team status as opposed to a club sport,” Austin said. “This obviously will have a lot to do with the college as well as the community seeing value in the possibility.
“There is a lot of interest from area high school students when it comes to golf. I think it is a great opportunity to have an additional sport for students to take part in at CASC. It gives the college a way to involve more students in campus activities, and it is a good recruiting tool when sharing with potential students all that CASC has to offer.”
