A local family has come home to the arms of the community who continues to rally behind them after the loss of their son on Sept. 3.
Several events are in the works in honor of William Elijah Lyon, affectionately named Liam, who was born Feb. 18, 2011 with a fatal heart condition. Liam’s journey was followed by people all over the world on the two Facebook pages dedicated to him. The support of his extended Facebook family has helped the family a great deal during his struggles and it continues today.
Maghen Moody of Greenwood, Ark. will be hosting a candlelight vigil in honor of Liam on Sunday, Sept. 9 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Poteau Football field.
“My husband and I grew up in Cameron,” she said. “I followed his story and he touched me deeply. I wanted to do this in remembrance of him.”
Moody said she also plans to release balloons during the vigil.
A bake sale fundraiser for the Lyon family is also being planed for Saturday, Sept. 15 in the parking lot of Walls in Poteau. If you would like to donate your time or a baked good to be sold at the fundraiser contact Christy Harper at (918) 385-1504.
A celebration of life for Liam is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Poteau. Visitation with the family will be held tonight from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Calvary Assemby of God Church in Poteau. The family is attempting to have the services on a wifi connection so that anyone who cannot attend the service can view it online. The Poteau Daily News will post that link on our Facebook page and website at www.poteaudailynews.com as soon as it becomes available.
Members of the family have said that Liam continues to bless their life by touching the lives of others even in death. They said that the outpouring of kindness both at home and abroad has been amazing, including Delta Airlines, who was responsible for bringing Liam, escorted by his aunt Jamie Ward, from Cincinnati, Ohio to Fort Smith, Ark.
The family said that many others have contacted them about donations. An account has been established to help the family financially. Donations can be made by direct donation to any Simmons First National Bank under the account name William Elijah Lyon. Donations can also be mailed to Liam Lyon c/o Grandpa Paul Tankersley, 23443 Shoup Road, Cameron, Okla. 74932.
The family said they know that baby Liam was put on this earth to touch the lives of others. They are so proud of what he was able to accomplish during his short life that will forever live on through the more than 80,000 people who are followers of the I love Liam Lyon Facebook page. The family is also in the planning stages of starting a nonprofit organization in honor of Liam to help other families who have a child struggling with severe health issues.
