DA Investigator escapes close call Thursday
An attempted arrestturned chaotic Thursdayafternoon after the man aninvestigator attempted toarrest in the Burger Kingparking lot fled the scenealmost striking him withhis vehicle.According to a witnessthat watched the ordealunfold, a District Attorney'sInvestigator with theLeFlore County DA'sOffice ordered a man out ofa Lexus at gun point shortlyafter 1 p.m. The manreportedly got out of his carbut then got back insideand nearly ran over the officeras he attempted to eludearrest.The driver of the whiteLexus, James Phillips, 28,of Fort Smith, tore throughthe parking lot, jumped thecurb then sped northboundon Broadway paying noheed to the officers in pursuitbehind him. Phillipsled the chase to the northlimits of Poteau until heturned toward the MountainView Trailer Park. WithDTF Agents, along withPoteau Police and Sheriff’sDeputies on his heels, hecontinued east until he wasunable to control his vehicleand wrecked on EastBranson Road.EMS of LeFlore Countywas dispatched to the sceneto examine an injuryPhillips reportedly receivedduring the accident but wascancelled before their arrival.The Lexus, the worsefor the wear in the pursuit,was towed to a localimpound lot minus one tireand with three additionalflats.Phillips was transportedto the LeFlore CountyDetention Center where hewas booked on charges ofassault and battery with adeadly weapon, attemptingto elude an officer, possessionof methamphetaminesand possession of drug paraphernalia.
