DA Investigator escapes close call Thursday

An attempted arrest
turned chaotic Thursday
afternoon after the man an
investigator attempted to
arrest in the Burger King
parking lot fled the scene
almost striking him with
his vehicle.
According to a witness
that watched the ordeal
unfold, a District Attorney's
Investigator with the
LeFlore County DA's
Office ordered a man out of
a Lexus at gun point shortly
after 1 p.m. The man
reportedly got out of his car
but then got back inside
and nearly ran over the officer
as he attempted to elude
The driver of the white
Lexus, James Phillips, 28,
of Fort Smith, tore through
the parking lot, jumped the
curb then sped northbound
on Broadway paying no
heed to the officers in pursuit
behind him. Phillips
led the chase to the north
limits of Poteau until he
turned toward the Mountain
View Trailer Park. With
DTF Agents, along with
Poteau Police and Sheriff’s
Deputies on his heels, he
continued east until he was
unable to control his vehicle
and wrecked on East
Branson Road.
EMS of LeFlore County
was dispatched to the scene
to examine an injury
Phillips reportedly received
during the accident but was
cancelled before their arrival.
The Lexus, the worse
for the wear in the pursuit,
was towed to a local
impound lot minus one tire
and with three additional
Phillips was transported
to the LeFlore County
Detention Center where he
was booked on charges of
assault and battery with a
deadly weapon, attempting
to elude an officer, possession
of methamphetamines
and possession of drug paraphernalia.
