Deadline nears in Shady Point special election

January 2, 2014

Time is getting short for Shady Point voters who wish to cast their ballot by absentee.
According to LeFlore County Election Board Secretary Sharon Steele, the ballots must be received by the election board no later than 7 p.m on Jan. 14. Due to time restrictions and mail service, the applications to get an absentee ballot is Jan. 8 at 5 p.m.
The special election will be held Jan. 14 and voters will decide who will fill the one-year unexpired trustee term. Candidates who cast their name into the race for the town position include Henry Wells and Leroy Smith.
Steele said absentee ballot applications are available at the county election board or can be downloaded from the Oklahoma State Election Board website www.ok.gov/elections/.
Voters who wish to cast their in-person early absentee vote before the Tuesday election will have two days to do so — Thursday, Jan. 9, and Friday, Jan. 10 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.
A new state law which took effect Nov. 1, changed the dates and times
State voters have come to expect for in-person early absentee voting.
“Starting this November, early voting days in Oklahoma have changed from Friday/Monday to Thursday/Friday,” explained State Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax.
Saturdays will continue to be early voting days for all state and federal elections. The hours for Saturday early voting at County Election Board offices statewide will change to 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Previously the early voting hours on Saturday began and ended one hour earlier. Zirax said during federal and state elections, when voter turnout is often the heaviest, the Saturday early voting option provides voters with a third opportunity to vote early.
“These changes will help County Election Board officials to place their focus entirely on Election Day preparations, instead of conducting early voting during the day immediately preceding an election,” said Zirax.
