The deer win the battle in the Midgley gun season

December 8, 2011

GUNNER'S DEER — Gunner McAlester, son of Wister Baseball Coach John McAlester, poses with this five-point buck he harvested Saturday near Wilburton. Photo Submitted by John McAlester

First of all, I want to wish happy birthdays to my mom, Elaine Midgley, and sister, Janice Couch, who both had birthdays within the last week or so. Happy birthday ladies — I love you both!

My good buddy, Wister Baseball Coach John McAlester, took his son, Gunner, on a hunt this last weekend near Wilburton. Gunner got a shot at a five-point buck, and he made the most of the opportunity shooting the buck right behind the front shoulder and dropping it within a few yards.
I have a feeling that that will be the first of many deer that Gunner will get to shoot since that boy is eat up with the hunting fever. I will be glad when he is old enough to do some bow hunting, so we can all go on some hunting adventures together.

Congratulations also go out to my friend, fellow Outdoor Columnist Jerry Davidson, who got an eight-point buck on Nov. 28 in LeFlore County, weighing 110 pounds.
