August 22, 2014

The third annual Dr. John Montgomery Scholarship Banquet, hosted by LeFlore County Branch NAACP, is slated for this weekend.
The banquet will start at 6 p.m. Saturday [Aug. 23] at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center.
Tickets are available at the Poteau Chamber of Commerce.
Adults are $25 and youths 17 and younger are $15. Corporate tables also are available.
This year's guest speaker is Dr. Paul Beran, chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith..
The scholarship honors Dr. John Montgomery, a former Poteau resident and veterinarian from 1952. He had a hand in the organization of the local NAACP and was instrumental in bridging racial gaps in the mid-1900s.
The scholarship banquet awarded five cash scholarships last year.
