WILBURTON — Eastern Oklahoma State College’s Men's Basketball Coach Scott Edgar has been named the NJCAA Region II Coach of the Year.
“It’s an honor any time you’re named Coach of the Year by your peers,” Edgar said. “It could not be accomplished without a tremendous team and that includes our players, our administration and our community.”
Three players for the eighth-ranked Mountaineers also received honors, which are voted on by the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference coaches.
Marcus Tarrance, a sophomore from Memphis, Tenn., and Tharone Chilton, a sophomore from Tulsa, were named to the 2011-12 All Region II and All Conference first teams. Tarrance is averaging 17 points and Chilton is averaging 15 points per game this season.
Bobby Jones, also a sophomore from Memphis, was named to the All Conference third team. He is averaging 16 points per game.
“This is an extremely celebrated year for all of us and a few guys have been deservedly recognized for their spectacular play,” Edgar said. “Marcus and Tharone are closing in on personal milestones of 1,000 career points at Eastern and Bobby humbly accepted the role of sixth man for this team when he could have started for us or any other team in the conference.”
The Mountaineers are 27-3 heading into the Region II Tournament. Eastern earned a bye for the first round and was slated to face Western Oklahoma State College in the quarterfinals Friday night at Oklahoma Baptist University's Noble Complex in Shawnee. The winner of the Region II Tournament advances to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament March 20-24 in Hutchinson, Kan.
