Elton Edward Thompson, 86, of Poteau died Saturday, May 12, 2012, in Poteau.
Elton was born Aug. 29, 1925, in Harmony to Lucian and Minnie (Fouts) Thompson.Â He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Larry Thompson.Â Elton was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.Â He served in WWII in the South Pacific on Okinawa and Peleliu Island; in action in defense ofÂ New Guinea; Cape Gloucester, New Britain; and occupation of China.Â Elton graduated from Wister High School; did his undergraduate work at OSU and received his law degree from the University of Arkansas in 1951.Â He practiced law in LeFlore County for 61 years.Â Elton was an avid gardener.Â He always insisted that birthdays must be celebrated with cake and ice cream.Â
Survivors include his wife, Dorene; sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn E. and Sandy Thompson of Poteau, Wesley and Candace Thompson of Sapulpa; former daughter-in-law, Frances Thompson;Â six grandchildren, Cheryl Arnall, Brian Thompson, Randie Thompson, Kelli Thompson, Candace Thompson, Leslie Mariah Thompson; 10 great-grandchildren; other relatives and loved ones.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at the Oakland Cemetery Pavilion, Poteau, with Rev. Jim Cook officiating.
