Explosion injures Heavener man

August 6, 2012

A Heavener man is listed in critical condition after his home on West Ave. D. exploded Sunday night.
According to Tony Rust, Investigator with the Oklahoma Fire Marshal's Office, the 38-year-old hispanic male was inside the home when the explosion occurred. Rust said it appeared that the man had turned on his stove and for unknown reasons and, a time later, the home exploded. The home appeared to have been blown off its foundation, walls were bowed from the force of the explosion and two walls of the home were completely destroyed. Witnesses said the blast propelled the victim into his yard.
Neighbors of the injured man said they were inside their home when there was a loud noise that shook everything inside their house. When they went outside, they found the victim crawling through his yard severely burned. Neighbors helped him to a safe place from the fire and called help.
The explosion caused extensive damage to the home and began to burn nearby trees located between the victims residence and a nearby home. Heavener Fire Department responded to the scene and were able to put out the fire and prevent it from spreading.
According to Rust, Sam McFarland, Chief of Heavener Fire Department and Arkansas Oklahoma Gas technicians checked the residence for gas leaks but none were discovered leaving the stove the most likely cause of the explosion.
The victim was taken from the scene by LeFlore County Emergency Medical Services to an emergency landing zone set up at the baseball fields south of Heavener and airlifted to Hillcrest Burn Center in Tulsa. According to Rust, on Monday morning he was listed in critical but stable condition with second and third degree burns on more than 40 percent of his body.
His name is being withheld pending the notification of his family.
