Fallin's environmental secretary to resign post

June 28, 2013

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Gov. Mary Fallin's Secretary of Environment Gary Sherrer is resigning.
Sherrer says in a letter to Fallin dated Friday that his plans to resign by Monday, the start of the new fiscal year. Sherrer did not give a reason for his resignation, and a telephone message left at his office Friday was not immediately returned.
Fallin described Sherrer as a "strong voice for sensible, commonsense policies."
Sherrer is a former Democratic state legislator who Fallin credited for working with policymakers on both sides of the aisle.
Deputy Secretary of Environment Tyler Powell is expected to fill in for Sherrer on an interim basis.
Fallin says she plans to combine the post with the secretary of energy position that was left vacant after Michael Ming resigned in May.
