Finally, the 2012 Poteau Wood Bat Festival got underway Friday afternoon, but the host Pirates were not the ones celebrating a win.
Thanks to a six-run fifth inning, the visiting Dickson Comets rallied, and held off a potential seventh-inning rally by Poteau, to down the Pirates 6-5 at Town Creek Park.
The Pirates (4-3) will get another chance this afternoon to get a win in their own festival as they will take on the Sallisaw-Central Tigers at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Town Creek Park, which will come on the heels of the Tigers' game with Hartshorne at noon this afternoon.
There will also be two games this afternoon in Cameron to conclude the festival at that site. The host Yellowjackets will play Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside at noon, followed by Stigler facing Northside at 2 p.m.
Editor's Note — Look for Sports Correspondent Clint Hays' story on the Friday games at Cameron involving the Yellowjackets and the Panama Razorbacks in Tuesday's edition. Also, the Wister Wildcats will play the Dale Pirates at noon today in Dale. If a third team can be found, the ’Cats will then play the third team at 2 p.m. today as part of a three-way.
