First scrimmage for Spiro Bulldogs shows team needs more 'discipline'

SPIRO — The one word Spiro Bulldogs Football Coach Chris Bunch said after Friday night's first scrimmage of the preseason against the Checotah Wildcats at McClain Stadium was “discpline” — and not in a positive way.
Bunch believes that his players were not as disciplined as needed to perform well on the gridiron. In Friday night's scrimmage, the ‘Cats threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another TD.
“We had kids doing something (on the field), and the back-ups over there (on the sideline) playing,” Bunch said. “That's not going to happen any more, or they won't be playing. When they would get into the game, half of them didn't know where they were supposed to go because they don't pay attention in practice. Hopefully, they'll learn from this. When we're in man-to-man, you're supposed to watch your man. We had kids peeking into the backfield. And that's just from not being disciplined. Those are things we've got to work on. We have to get our kids to do what we tell them to do, and that will come with practice.
“We're going to have to play good on defense early because we have some young kids on offense. It's going to be a learning process. But I expect improvement every time we come out.”
There were a couple of bright spots on defense. Devon Perry picked off a pass during the second series of plays after Checotah's first score, while the Spiro second-string defense kept out Checotah's No. 2 offense after the Wildcats got inside the Spiro 5. Later in the scrimmage, Todd Whitfield had a QB sack.
Offensively, the ’Dogs had some bright moments. Both quarterbacks, Trevon Mitchem and Cameron Cole, threw TD passes. Mitchem hit Ty Hawkins on a 45-yard touchdown pass play down the right sideline, while Cole connected with Colton Gamble on a 13-yard scoring play.
