Five lucky local high school baseball players received good news on Tuesday that they were named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-Region 6 Baseball Team.Poteau’s Jay Werner and Blake Johnson made the Large East Team, while Wister duo Tyler Gibson and Colby Turnipseed along with Talihina’s Trevor Crone made the Small East. All five are in line to be selected to the 2013 All-State East teams, which will be made known at a later date.Werner and Johnson helped led the Pirates to a record 29 wins (29-9), and were a part of three tournament titles — the LeFlore County Tournament, the Coal Miners Classic and the Class 4A District Tournament. The Pirates were regional runners-up, and missed making state by one win. Werner will play college football at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.Gibson and Turnipseed helped led the Wildcats (20-9 this spring) to six straight state tournament appearances from spring 2010 until fall 2012, but were eliminated in the Class 2A Regional Tournament this fall to see the streak snapped. Turnipseed will play college ball at Carl Albert State College, while Gibson will do so at Seminole State College.Crone helped guide the Golden Tigers to a record of 17-12 and a trip to the Class 2A Regional Tournament finals before seeing their season end. One of his highlights this season was hitting a grand-slam home run in a 16-8 mercy-rule win over the Pirates at Town Creek Park just prior to spring break.
