Football practice begins Tuesday; Heat a big factor, maybe more so than ever, as football practice commences next week

FOOTBALL IS HERE — New Poteau Pirates Football Coach Greg Werner, wearing cap, talks to the campers as the final day of the 2012 Poteau Quarterback Club Football Camp ended Wednesday morning. For the last several weeks, the heatwave has made its presence known in LeFlore County, and there doesn't seem to be any relief in sight. That doesn't bode well for high school football players, who will begin practice on Tuesday for upcoming season.
“We wish it were a little cooler,” said new Poteau Coach Greg Werner, whose Pirates will begin practice at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday as well as traditional 2:30 p.m. timeslot. “The last two summers have been just unbelievably hot. This summer seems to be worse than last summer, and I didn't think it could get any worse than last summer. It's going to be hot, but since we're practicing in the morning, we won't have to go near as long in the afternoon. The kids like that because it allows them to get out in the heat, but for not near as long. Since school starts on the ninth, we have to get used to it (heat) anyway.”
“We're going to try to beat the heat a little bit,” said new Heavener Coach Carl Lee, whose Wolves will begin practice at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
For schools, like Poteau and Spiro which begin school on Thursday, players will be practicing at the customary mid-afternoon. So, there won't be much time to get players acclimated to the heat.
“We start school on Thursday,” said Spiro Coach Chris Bunch, whose Bulldogs will begin practice around 5:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday. “The first two days will be in the evening, then after that when school starts we'll be in the afternoon.”
