For the second game in a row at Costner Stadium, the Poteau Pirates drew a top 10 team in the Fort Gibson Tigers.
Perhaps the play that decided the game happened in the final nine seconds of the first half. The Pirates and the Tigers were even at 21-21 when the Tigers intercepted the ball on their own 10-yard line. The Tigers did not hesitate as they called Jake Gandara's number on a sweep right. Gandara is perhaps the best player that the Pirates have played so far this year, and could be the Offensive Player of the Year in District 4A-4. Gandara made a juke in the hole and then simply outran the Pirates for a 90-yard touchdown run.
Poteau never did really recover from that play, and the Pirates could not sustain anything in the second half. Fort Gibson kept the pressure on the Pirates offensively in the second half and won the game going away by the score of 49-21 to spoil homecoming for Poteau.
