Brave enough to tackle the mud for a great cause? Women’s Crisis Services is hosting Brave the Mud Run on Aug. 24 at the Leflore County Fairgrounds.Â
Participants will slosh through mud pits and complete 10 obstacles along the adventurous 5k course. The race will start and end at the Leflore County Fairgrounds and go along the beautiful Frisco Trails. A few of the obstacles that mudders will encounter are The Barn Burner, a rope wall and belly crawl through the mud pits.Â
Awards will be given for first, second and third place overall men's and women's 5k; first, second and third place team 5k; largest team; best costume male and female 5k; and best team costume. Costumes are encouraged.Â
All profits earned will go directly to the Women’s Crisis Services.
“The women’s shelter provides $440,771.59 in total yearly contract services to assist women and children,” said Deanna Chancellor, executive director for Women’s Crisis Services of Leflore County.
She said that last year the shelter provided 1,519 days of residency to women and 1,635 days of residency to children. “The money earned from this mud run will be greatly appreciated and allow us to offer more programs to our clients,” she said.
Organizers said they wanted to have a fundraiser that was fun and exciting for all ages.
“That’s how the Brave the Mud Run was born,” said Glenda Wise, WCS board member and race director.
“We want this event to grow to be as big as the other mud runs people travel three or four hours to do. We’ve enlisted the expertise of Tatur Racing to help with logistics and timing to ensure participants get the best possible event,” she said.
Organizers plan to make this an annual event and hope it will become their largest fundraiser to help the shelter empower more women by offering a safe environment for them and their children.Â
Registration fees are $45 for individuals and $40 each for teams of four or more until Aug. 1. After that date fees go up to $60 and $55. Choctaw Nation has also put this race on their PACE schedule, all PACE members can sign up through Doris Winlock and Choctaw Nation until Aug. 1.
If registered by Aug. 1 each participant will receive a custom Brave the Mud Run medal and technical shirt. Contact Wise at (918) 839-4785, to register for the event or go online at www.bravethemudrun.eventbrite.com.
