TULSA — The Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team has not lost back-to-back games this season, and did not want to have happen last weekend as it entertained the Central Florida Knights for the second time in three weeks at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium. However, Saturday's meeting was for all the marbles — the 2012 Conference USA championship.
Just as two weeks ago, Tulsa prevailed, but perhaps not as easily as the previous time. After winning 23-21 on Nov. 17, the Golden Hurricane knocked off the Knights 33-27 on Saturday to win the C-USA Championship Game, but this contest had to go overtime.
“It's tough,” said Bill Blankenship, Tulsa's coach and a Spiro native. “They knew a lot about us, but I felt like we knew a lot about them. They have a very good football team, and they're well-coached. They didn't do anything to give us the game. They made us earn it.”
With the win, not only did the Golden Hurricane (10-3 overall, 8-1 in C-USA play) win the conference title, but was offered and accepted a bid to the Liberty Bowl on New Year's Eve afternoon in Memphis, Tenn., against Iowa State — the team that defeated Tulsa 38-23 on Sept. 1 at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa.
