This is a good week to be a Pirate

May 7, 2013

The Poteau soccer team’s domination of Oologah in the Class 4A state quarterfinals has set the Pirates up for perhaps the biggest sporting event in Poteau High School sports history — playing a state semifinal game at Costner Stadium. I believe, that unless one of the 1950s football teams played a semifinal game in Poteau, that this will be a first.
In my tenure as statistician and writer in covering the Poteau Pirates football team, it played in semifinal games at Seminole, Putnam City, Tulsa Union and Choctaw twice.
The Poteau Pirates soccer team appears to be focused and on a mission. The Pirates’ 6-2 victory was total and complete domination.
Bethany is unrated and finished second behind No. 2 Oklahoma City Santa Fe South.
If the Pirates prevail tonight, they could set up a No. 1 vs. No. 2 for the Class 4A state championship at 8 p.m. Saturday at the University of Tulsa’s Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium, or they could have a rematch against their league foe Fort Gibson for the state crown.
All Poteau Pirate fans should come out and support the Pirates tonight as they try to get to Saturday’s state finals.
