You may not know this about me, but I used to be LeFlore County’s best stunt man in the late 1970s. I got a phone call from my old event coordinator and team manager, Jeff “Jedi” Dennis. He wanted to promote one last big jump for me.
I was all set to get out the ol’ 1984 Kawasaki 125, grow back those killer pork-chop sidebars and jump the bull at the Black Angus Motel with all the proceeds raised going to local charities. I loved it.
So, I got to the motel to get some measurements for the ramp builders, Ed Sockey and Dr. Rodney Ford. To my surprise, the bull is gone! Holy cow?
That bull represents Poteau — that bull was Poteau. Every kid from out of town sat on that bull, and had their picture taken. In 1978, we took our family Christmas pictures in front of the bull.
I’m trying to figure out how long the bull has been gone. I can’t believe that this historic county legend is gone.
After I collected myself, I texted “Jedi” and asked him what do we do now? He came up with a new jump. I could jump Town Creek (a.k.a., “the Snake River”) right behind Reed-Williams Insurance so that I can get a running start and jump it between the Town Creek Park — the home of the Poteau Pirates baseball team — and the home field of the Poteau Lady Pirates softball field.
For a jump this big, I’ll have to wear my super oil riggers coveralls and have the Purple Plume bling them out with sequins. If I don’t make the jump, at least I’ll look cool!
The jump will take place at high noon on April 1 — that’s right, on April Fool’s Day. You can get your tickets at On the Spot Auto Glass and Reed-Williams Insurance. Keith Marquez at Reed-Williams told me he turned 45 this month, and then looked at me. He paused, then said to me, “That means you’re really, really old, Jody!” Thanks for reminding me, Mr. Marquez.
Save the world, recycle.
God bless our troops and veterans.
Have a great weekend.
