For the past three weeks, the Poteau Pirates have drawn a trio of thoroughbreds in Gravette, Ark., Hilldale and Tulsa Webster. That trio of teams were launching passes from all over the field, and, in most cases, they were being answered.
Stilwell presented a different problem for the Pirates in Friday night's homecoming game at Costner Stadium. They were more cut out of a Clydesdale mold. The Indians had a 5-9 running back by the name of Jerrell Hawk, and he ran low to the ground — thus making him extremely hard to bring down. Poteau kept rotating fresh bodies into the defensive line, and they allowed Hawk to make yards between the 40s, but when it got to that point the Pirates simply hunkered down and stopped the Indians.
The Poteau offense made big plays in the passing game and Michael Reynolds had several major bursts in the first half. Poteau jumped out to a 21-0 advantage and then held off the Indians to post the 24-0 District 4A-4 win.
